We produced a short video for Sky Island Alliance's Madrean Archipelago Biodiversity Assessment program to highlight the beauty, diversity, and drama of one of their expeditions.
In July, six naturalists and photographers joined biologists Tom Van Devender and Ana Lilia Reina, with the Sky Island Alliance MABA program (Madrean Archipelago Biodiversity Assessment) to return to the Sierra Aconchi west of the Río Sonora in central Sonora, Mexico. The four-day trip focused on documenting plants, insects, reptiles, mammals and birds. Several new beetle species are expected, and possible range extensions for several reptiles. The lovely rattlesnake is a Tiger; the gloriously singing birds building the nest are Sinaloan wrens; the calling frogs are Western Barking Frogs (which only call 1-2 nights per year, right after the first rain); and the two at the end are a pepsis wasp ("tarantula hawk") and its prey, a hapless tarantula.
